A lot of people have a hard time articulating what they like or don’t like about a website design. Whether it’s your existing site or a brand new Mock-Up, you need to know how to tell your web designer what you like and what you don’t. To help you communicate those thoughts clearly, here are some tips on how to give feedback on a website design.

Look at Your Website Design as a Series of Elements

Rather than just commenting on the overall look and feel of the site, try breaking it down into its core components. By reviewing each item, you can address smaller issues without having to scrap the whole website design.

Content Structure

First, you should take a look at the site’s content structure. The flow of your website is essential to the user experience. What is the first thing your visitors see? How will they move from page to page? Where is the final destination? A clear path, or hierarchy, of ideas and messages, means more conversions.

Colors

Does the color palette complement your logo and reflect your company brand? For example, you would not expect to see a black and red color scheme on a McDonald’s website. Those colors are not what people think of when they think of their brand. If you don’t have established colors, then the choice is pretty subjective. Do you like the ones your designer chose for your website design?

Fonts

Just as the colors on your site should fit your brand, so should the fonts. For instance, you probably don’t want to use Comic Sans on a funeral site. Take a look at the fonts used for your website design. Are they Sans or Sans Serif fonts? Do they match the fonts used in your logo or on other company literature? Can you read them? It could be that the size and not the font itself is a problem.

Spacing

Take a look at the spacing on your landing pages. Do things seem crowded? For the most part, people like balance. Do the various elements balance each other? It could be that the elements are too far apart. There should not be a lot of white space between focal points in your website design.

Imagery

Pictures are one of the most important parts of your website design. They rank equally with the content. Why? Because your users have grown up in an image-saturated world. Most visitors will scan your page and get the most important points from your images. Then, once they have identified the proper image, they zero in on the text that applies to their needs.

Do you like the images used in your website design? Do you want stock photos with a slick, professional look or would you prefer candid shots from your own company? You can also forgo concrete images and use more abstract artwork or conceptual images. Whichever you decide to use, the images need to fit the application and stay consistent.

Functional Elements

Would you like for your website to have cool effects? Perhaps you saw a cool slider or an accordion on another site, and you want it for yours. Feel free to let your website designer know about these elements. He can let you know whether or not you can incorporate them into your website design.

What is Missing from Your Website Design?

Sometimes the hardest element to identify is the one that is not there. To give proper feedback on your website design, you may need to collect feedback yourself. Ask someone unrelated to the project to take and look at the website design and see if they can identify missing elements.

For instance, they may notice something simple, like your phone number missing from the header. Too often, as you concentrate on the more complicated elements, simple items slip through the cracks.

  • Search Bar
  • Newsletter Sign-Up
  • Navigation Links in the Footer
  • Picture Gallery
  • Contact Form

Plus, you also want to identify other elements that you would like to see, such as a video, that are not present. All of these things can be rectified by your web designer after you submit your feedback to him.

Free Mock-Up Offer

Feedback is important, but change can be costly. Website designers, that charge by the hour, are paid for creating the initial design AND for implementing changes. We offer a Free Mock-Up of your website design before you make any commitments. That way, you can provide feedback on the website design before you are billed for any design work. This process gives you the best website design for your application and keeps you within budget. Contact us to find out more!
